Weekly Railroad Service Report Update – 1/15/15

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) published the 13th weekly service report update for Class 1 railroads spanning data acquired from January 4th to January 10th. Overall, ethanol and grain transportation speeds declined off of the 12 week highs experienced in the previous week while weekly held cars also declined off of relative highs. Ethanol Transportation: • Average train speeds for ethanol transportation declined 6.7% week-over-week from the 12 week high experienced in the previous week. Ethanol train speeds of 21.9 MPH remain 8.4% higher than the initial data point released 12 weeks ago and 2.6% higher than the previous 12 week average ethanol train speeds. Weekly Average Train Speed-Ethanol - Jan 15 • Ethanol cars held 48-120 hours declined 35.6% week-over-week from the 12 week high experienced in the previous week. Ethanol cars held 48-120 hours remain 11.2% higher than the initial data point released 12 weeks ago but were 17.5% lower than the previous 12 week average cars held 48-120 hours. Weekly Cars Held 48-120 Hours-Ethanol - Jan 15 • Ethanol cars held longer than 120 hours increased declined 20.1% week-over-week from the 12 week high experienced in the previous week. Ethanol cars held longer than 120 hours remain 72.6% higher than the initial data point released 12 weeks ago and 30.3% higher than the previous 12 week average cars held longer than 120 hours. Weekly Cars Held Greater Than 48-120 Hours-Ethanol - Jan 15 Grain Transportation: • Average train speeds for grain transportation declined 2.2% week-over-week from the 12 week high experienced in the previous week. Grain train speeds of 21.8 MPH remain 5.0% higher than the initial data point released 12 weeks ago and 5.7% higher than the previous 12 week average grain train speeds. Weekly Average Train Speed-Grain - Jan 15 • Grain cars held 48-120 hours declined 29.2% week-over-week to a new 12 week low. Grain cars held 48-120 hours remain 23.0% higher than the initial data point released 12 weeks ago but are 23.1% lower than the previous 12 week average cars held 48-120 hours. Weekly Cars Held 48-120 Hours-Grain - Jan 15 • Grain cars held longer than 120 hours increased declined 24.1% week-over-week from the 12 week high experienced in the previous week. Grain cars held longer than 120 hours remain 31.1% higher than the initial data point released 12 weeks ago and 9.7% higher than the previous 12 week average cars held longer than 120 hours.
