Weekly Railroad Service Report Update – 1/8/15

The Surface Transportation Board (STB) published the 12th weekly service report update for Class 1 railroads spanning data acquired from December 28th to January 3rd. Overall, ethanol and grain transportation speeds were significantly higher, setting 12 week record highs, while weekly held cars were also generally higher with weekly cars held longer than 120 hours also setting 12 week record highs. Ethanol Transportation: • Average train speeds for ethanol transportation increased 11.7% week-over-week to a new 12 week high of 22.9 MPH. Ethanol train speeds were 16.2% higher than the initial data point released 11 weeks ago and 11.0% higher than the previous 11 week average ethanol train speeds. Weekly Average Train Speed-Ethanol - Jan 8 • Ethanol cars held 48-120 hours increased 3.0% week-over-week to a new 12 week high. Ethanol cars held 48-120 hours were 72.6% higher than the initial data point released 11 weeks ago and 31.3% higher than the previous 11 week average cars held 48-120 hours. Weekly Cars Held 48-120 Hours-Ethanol - Jan 8 • Ethanol cars held longer than 120 hours increased significantly week-over-week, up 121.4% to a new 12 week high. Ethanol cars held longer than 120 hours were 216.2% higher than the initial data point released 11 weeks ago and 73.1% higher than the previous 11 week average cars held longer than 120 hours. Weekly Cars Held Greater Than 48-120 Hours-Ethanol - Jan 8 Grain Transportation: • Average train speeds for grain transportation increased by 6.6% week-over-week to a new 12 week high of 22.3 MPH. Grain train speeds were 7.4% higher than the initial data point released 11 weeks ago and 8.8% higher than the previous 11 week average grain train speeds. Weekly Average Train Speed-Grain - Jan 8 • Grain cars held 48-120 hours declined 25.7% from the previous 11 week high experienced in the prior week. Grain cars held 48-120 hours remain 73.7% higher than the initial data point released 11 weeks ago and 9.5% higher than the previous 11 week average cars held 48-120 hours. Weekly Cars Held 48-120 Hours-Grain - Jan 8 • Grain cars held longer than 120 hours increased significantly week-over-week, up 103.2% to a new 12 week high. Grain cars held longer than 120 hours were 72.6% higher than the initial data point released 11 weeks ago and 50.5% higher than the previous 11 week average cars held longer than 120 hours.
