Crop Progress Update – 10/19/20

According to the USDA, corn and soybean harvest progress each remained at four year seasonal high levels through the week ending Oct 18th. Corn harvest progress finished above analyst expectations however soybean harvest progress finished below expectations. Corn: Corn maturation as of the week ending Oct 18th was 97% completed, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 82% completed and the five year average pace of 94% completed. Corn harvest progress as of the week ending Oct 18th was 60% completed, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 28% completed and the five year average pace of 43% completed. Corn harvest progress reached a four year seasonal high level, finishing above analyst expectations of 54% completed. 61% of the current corn crop was identified to be in good or excellent condition as of the week ending Oct 18th, unchanged from the previous week. 14% of the current corn crop was identified as poor or very poor, also unchanged from the previous week. 24% of the Iowa corn crop was identified to be in poor or very poor condition as of the week ending Oct 18th, down two percent from the previous week. Millions of acres of Iowa corn and soybean crops were heavily damaged by the early August derecho. 47% of the Iowa corn crop was identified to be in good or excellent condition, up three percent from the previous year but remaining at a seven year seasonal low level. Soybeans: Soybean leaf dropping was 97% completed as of the week ending Oct 18th, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 91% completed and the five year average pace of 95% completed. Soybean harvest progress as of the week ending Oct 18th was 75% completed, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 40% completed and the five year average pace of 58% completed. Soybean harvest progress reached a four year seasonal high level but finished below analyst expectations of 80% completed.
