Crop Progress Update – 8/20/18

According to USDA, corn dough and dent progress and soybean pod setting progress have remained ahead of historical seasonal figures through the week ending Aug 19th however good-to-excellent crop conditions declined to within one percent of five year average figures for both corn and soybeans. Corn: Corn dough progress as of the week ending Aug 19th was 85% complete, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 74% and the five year average pace of 72%. Corn dent progress as of the week ending Aug 19th was 44% complete, reaching a six year seasonal high and finishing significantly ahead of last year’s pace of 27% and the five year average pace of 26%. A total of 68% of the corn crop was in good or excellent condition as of the week ending Aug 19th, down two percent from the previous week. 12% of the corn crop was identified as in poor or very poor condition, up two percent from the previous week. The current seasonal good-to-excellent corn conditions of 68% finished slightly above the five year average of 67.8% but remained below the good-to-excellent conditions experienced throughout 2014, 2015 and 2016. Soybeans: 91% of the soybean crop has set pods as of the week ending Aug 19th, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 86% and the five year average pace of 83%. A total of 65% of the soybean crop was in good or excellent condition as of the week ending Aug 19th, down one percent from the previous week. 11% of the soybean crop was identified as in poor or very poor condition, up one percent from the previous week. The current seasonal good-to-excellent soybean conditions of 65% finished slightly below the five year average of 65.6%, remaining below the good-to-excellent conditions experienced throughout 2014 and 2016.
