Crop Progress Update – 7/30/18

According to USDA, corn silking and dough progress and soybean blooming and pod setting progress have remained ahead of historical seasonal figures through the week ending Jul 29th while good-to-excellent crop conditions remained above five year average figures. Corn: Corn silking as of the week ending Jul 29th was 91% complete, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 82% and the five year average pace of 82%. Corn dough progress as of the week ending Jul 29th was 38% complete, finishing significantly ahead of last year’s pace of 21% and the five year average pace of 20%. A total of 72% of the corn crop was in good or excellent condition as of the week ending Jul 29th, unchanged from the previous week. Nine percent of the corn crop was identified as in poor or very poor condition, also unchanged from the previous week. The current seasonal good-to-excellent corn conditions finished above the five year average of 69% but remained below the good-to-excellent conditions experienced throughout 2014 and 2016. Soybeans: Soybean bloomings as of the week ending Jul 29th were 86% complete, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 80% and the five year average pace of 77%. 60% of the soybean crop has set pods as of the week ending Jul 29th, finishing significantly ahead of last year’s pace of 45% and the five year average pace of 41%. A total of 70% of the soybean crop was in good or excellent condition as of the week ending Jul 29th, unchanged from the previous week but reduced one percent within the ‘excellent’ condition category. Eight percent of the soybean crop was identified as in poor or very poor condition, unchanged from the previous week. The current seasonal good-to-excellent soybean conditions finished above the five year average of 65.4% but remained slightly below the good-to-excellent conditions experienced throughout 2014 and 2016.
