Crop Progress Update – 5/29/18

According to USDA, corn and soybean planting progress and emergence have trended ahead of previous year levels through the week ending May 27th. Corn: Corn plantings as of the week ending May 27th were 92% complete, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 90% and the five year average pace of 90%. Corn emergence as of the week ending May 27th was 72% complete, finishing ahead of last year’s pace of 70% and the five year average pace of 69%. A total of 79% of the corn crop was in good or excellent condition as of the week ending May 27th, while just 3% of the corn crop was identified as in poor or very poor condition. The current seasonal good-to-excellent corn conditions were tied for the highest experienced on record. Soybeans: Soybean plantings as of the week ending May 27th were 77% complete, finishing significantly ahead of last year’s pace of 65% and the five year average pace of 62%. An additional 21% of the total U.S. soybean crop was planted during the week ending May 27th. Weekly increases in soybean plantings on a percentage basis were led by North Dakota, followed by South Dakota and Minnesota. The May 27th weekly increase in soybean plantings of 21% was greater than the historical average seasonal increase of 18.2%. Soybean emergence as of the week ending May 27th was 47% complete, finishing significantly ahead of last year’s pace of 34% and the five year average pace of 32%.
