U.S. Cattle & Hogs Production Update – Dec ’16

According to USDA, U.S. commercial red meat production totaled 4.50 billion pounds in Nov ’16, finishing up 3.8% MOM and 6.7% YOY when normalized for slaughter days and reaching a record seasonal high for the month of November. Total red meat production has increased on a YOY basis over 15 consecutive months through November while the MOM increase in total red meat production of 3.8% was twice as large as the ten year average October – November seasonal increase of 1.9%. ’15-’16 annual U.S. red meat production increased 3.3% YOY, finishing at an eight year high. US Red Meat Production - Dec 16 Pork – Production Increases to a Record Seasonal High, Finishes up 3.0% YOY Nov ’16 U.S. pork production of 2.24 billion pounds increased 4.1% MOM and 3.0% YOY when normalized for slaughter days, reaching a record seasonal high for the month of November. U.S. pork production has increased on a YOY basis over seven consecutive months through November. Nov ’16 total hogs slaughtered increased 3.9% YOY, more than offsetting a 0.7% YOY decline in average weights/head. ’14-’15 annual U.S. pork production finished up 4.6% YOY, which was a seven year high on a percentage basis. ’15-’16 annual U.S. pork production increased an additional 2.2% YOY, finishing at a record annual high. US Pork Production - Dec 16 Beef – Production Increases to a Record Seasonal High, Finished up 10.8% YOY Nov ’16 U.S. beef production of 2.24 billion pounds increased 3.5% MOM and 10.8% YOY when normalized for slaughter days, reaching a record seasonal high for the month of November. The YOY increase in beef production was the largest experienced in over nine and a half years on a percentage basis. U.S. beef production has increased on a YOY basis over 13 consecutive months through November. The Nov ’16 total number of cattle slaughtered increased by 11.3% YOY, more than offsetting a 0.6% YOY decline in average weights/head. ’14-’15 annual U.S. beef production finished down 4.7% YOY however ’15-’16 annual U.S. beef production gained back a portion of the losses, finishing 4.4% higher on a YOY basis.
