U.S. Cattle on Feed Update –Jul ’15

According to USDA, cattle and calves on feed for slaughter market in the U.S. for feedlots with capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.2 million head on July 1, 2015. The Jul ’15 U.S. cattle on feed supply was up 193,000 head, or 1.9%, from July 1st of last year. US Cattle on Feed - July Placements in feedlots during Jun ’15 totaled 1.48 million head, up 13,000 head, or 0.9%, from June of last year. Placements for those weighing 800 pounds or more increased 11.2% YOY while placements for those weighing 700-799 pounds increased 2.4% YOY, placements for those weighing 600-699 pounds increased 2.0% YOY and placements for those under 600 pounds declined by 13.6% YOY. US Cattle Placements - July After deferred placements of heavier animals last summer, weights from Aug ’14 – Jun ’15 indicate a continued trend towards heavier placements. Placements for those weighing 800 pounds or more have increased by 6.6% YOY over the 11 month period. US Cattle Placements by Weight Group - July Jun ’15 cattle placements under 700 pounds declined by 50,000 head, or 7.7%, YOY. Cattle placements under 700 pounds were generally higher throughout the ’13-’14 production season, finishing up 4.2% YOY, however ’14-’15 placements under 700 pounds have declined 10.5% YTD through the first three quarters of the production season. US Cattle Placements under 700lbs - July Jun ’15 cattle placements 700 pounds or heavier finished up 63,000 head, or 7.7%, YOY. Cattle placements 700 pounds or heavier finished the ’13-’14 production season down 3.3% after declining 9.0% over the second half of the production season, but are up 0.1% YTD through the first three quarters of the ’14-’15 production season. US Cattle Placements over 700lbs - July Marketings of fed cattle during Jun ’15 totaled 1.75 million head, down 100,000 head, or 5.4%, from June of last year. Jun ’15 marketings of fed cattle were the lowest on record for the month of June. Marketings have declined YOY for 18 consecutive months, with total marketings down 5.5% over the period.
