Chinese Dairy Imports Update – Apr ’18

Executive Summary Chinese dairy import figures provided by GTIS were recently updated with values spanning through Mar ’18. Highlights from the updated report include:
  • Mar ’18 total Chinese dairy import volumes rebounded slightly, finishing up 3.3% MOM on a daily average basis and 1.2% YOY. Chinese dairy import volumes have finished higher on a YOY basis over nine of the past ten months through Mar ’18.
  • Mar ’18 Chinese whole milk powder declined 17.4% YOY, finishing at a nine year seasonal low for the month of March, while skim milk powder imports declined 15.9% YOY, finishing at a three year seasonal low.
  • Mar ’18 Chinese dairy imports excluding whole milk powder and skim milk powder increased 9.5% YOY, reaching a record seasonal high for the month of March.
Additional Report Details According to GTIS, Mar ’18 total Chinese dairy import volumes increased 3.3% MOM and 1.2% YOY, finishing higher on a YOY basis for the ninth time in the past ten months. Chinese dairy import volumes originating from within the EU-28 increased most significantly on a YOY basis throughout the month, more than offsetting YOY declines in imports originating from within New Zealand and the U.S. Mar ’18 Chinese import volumes of whole milk powder (WMP) and skim milk powder (SMP) each declined on a YOY basis for the second consecutive month, finishing down 17.4% and 15.9%, respectively. Chinese WMP import volumes reached a nine year seasonal low throughout Mar ’18, while SMP import volumes finished at a three year seasonal low. Chinese dairy imports excluding WMP and SMP remained strong, however, finishing up 9.5% YOY to a record seasonal high for the month of March. Chinese dairy imports excluding WMP and SMP have finished higher on a YOY basis over nine of the past ten months through Mar ’18.
