U.S. Dairy Cow Slaughter Update – Oct ’15

According to USDA, Sep ’15 U.S. dairy cow slaughter of 251,800 head was up 5.9% YOY and 15.4% MOM on a daily average basis. The monthly YOY increase in dairy cow slaughter was the ninth experienced in the past ten months while the August – September MOM increase of 15.4% was significantly greater than the ten year average August – September increase in slaughter rates of 3.5%. Monthly US Dairy Cow Slaughter - Oct The increase in slaughter rates contributed to the U.S. milk cow herd declining MOM for the third time in four months during Sep ’15. The U.S. milk cow herd currently stands at 9,310,000 head, which remains 36,000 head more than September of last year. Monthly US Dairy Cow Slaughter2 - Oct The most significant MOM increase in dairy cow slaughter was exhibited in Standard Federal Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada) followed by Standard Federal Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin). No MOM decreases in dairy cow slaughter were exhibited within the Standard Federal Regions. Sep 15 MOM US Dairy Cow Slaughter by Standard Federal Region - Oct Similarly to the MOM declines, the most significant YOY increase in dairy cow slaughter was exhibited in Standard Federal Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada) followed by Standard Federal Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin). No YOY decreases in dairy cow slaughter were exhibited within the Standard Federal Regions. Sep 15 YOY US Dairy Cow Slaughter by Standard Federal Region - Oct Dairy cow slaughter increased 11.0% MOM on a daily average basis and 5.6% YOY within Standard Federal Region 5 (Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio and Wisconsin). The YOY increase in dairy cow slaughter exhibited within Standard Federal Region 5 was the first experienced throughout the ’14-’15 production season. Despite the increase, ’14-’15 annual dairy cow slaughter finished down 11.9% throughout the region. Slaughter figures for Standard Federal Region 5 were withheld throughout 2013 in order to avoid disclosing data for individual operations. Monthly US Dairy Cow Slaughter Region 5 - Oct Dairy cow slaughter continued to increase within Standard Federal Region 9 (Arizona, California, Hawaii and Nevada), finishing up 15.5% MOM on a daily average basis and 9.4% YOY. Dairy cow slaughter has increased YOY for ten consecutive months within Standard Federal Region 9 through Sep ’15. ’14-’15 annual dairy cow slaughter finished up 7.6% throughout the region.
